چکیده

Complexation of a polyelectrolyte with an oppositely charged spherical macroion is studied for both salt free and salty solutions. When a polyelectrolyte winds around the macroion, its turns repel each other and form an almost equidistant solenoid. It is shown that this repulsive correlations of turns lead to the charge inversion: more polyelectrolyte winds around the macroion than it is necessary to neutralize it. The charge inversion becomes stronger with increasing concentration of salt and can exceed 100%. MonteCarlo simulation results agree with our analytical theory. PACS: 87.14.Gg, 87.15.Nn

Energetic and conformational aspects of dendrimer overcharging by linear polyelectrolytes.

Extensive Brownian dynamics simulations of conformational changes accompanying the overcharging of a dendrimer by an oppositely charged long linear polyelectrolyte (LPE) have been carried out. The simulated results have been compared with the predictions of the Nguen and Shklovskii correlation theory [Physica A 293, 324 (2001)] for impenetrable charged spherical macroion. Dendrimer overcharging...

Complexation and overcharging of polyelectrolyte stars and charged colloids.

We examine the complexation behavior of polyelectrolyte stars on oppositely charged colloidal particles with similar sizes by means of computer simulations employing the molecular dynamics approach. In particular the overcharging phenomenon is considered and its dependence on the charge and functionality of the stars. The complexes thus formed are a realization of inverse patchy particles (Bia...

1 5 M ay 2 00 1 Overcharging by macroions : above all , an entropy effect

Model macroion solutions next to a charged wall show interface true overcharging, charge reversal and inversion, and layering. Macroion layering is present, even if the wall or the macroparticle are uncharged or if the wall and macroions are like-charged. An effective long-range attractive force between the adsorbed macroions is implied. The results are obtained through an integral equation the...

Density functional theory for planar electric double layers: closing the gap between simple and polyelectrolytes.

We report a nonlocal density functional theory (NLDFT) for polyelectrolyte solutions within the primitive model; i.e., the solvent is represented by a continuous dielectric medium, and the small ions and polyions by single and tangentially connected charged hard spheres, respectively. The excess Helmholtz energy functional is derived from a modified fundamental measure theory for hard-sphere re...

Salt-modulated structure of polyelectrolyte-macroion complex fibers.

The structure and stability of strongly charged complex fibers, formed by complexation of a single long semi-flexible polyelectrolyte chain and many oppositely charged spherical macroions, are investigated numerically at the ground-state level using a chain-sphere cell model. The model takes into account chain elasticity as well as electrostatic interactions between charged spheres and chain se...
